What is Data & Information? Difference between Data and Information.

What is Data?

1.       . Data is a collection of Quantitative and Qualitative variables.
2.       . Data which basically means a collection of unorganized numbers, characters, text etc.
3.      .  It is defined as a collection of meaningful facts which can be stored and processed by computers or humans.
4.        .It is basically a collection of unorganized facts, concepts or instructions in a formalized manner suitable for communication, interpretation, processing by humans or some  automatic means such as computers, ATM’s.
5.       . Data is defined as collection of facts that has been translated convenient to analyze or to do further calculations.

Forms of Data:

a.       It can be numeric, alphabetic or alphanumeric.

b.      Images, pictures, video segments, multimedia and animated data.

Example:

Phone numbers, weights, prices costs, number of marks, pictures of animals or peoples etc.

What is Information?

1.       Information is defined as the processed data which helps us in making decisions.

2.       The information is obtained by arranging data into a meaning form.

3.       It can be defined as the output produced when data is being manipulated which helps in decision making.

Difference between Data and Information:

1.       Data is/are the facts of the world unprocessed raw information. Data is normally stored in a database or a file. Where as Information is the result of processing, manipulating and organizing data in a way that adds to the knowledge of the person receiving it.

2.       Data refers to raw material which when processed makes meaningful output, which information refers to a processed outcome of data. Data is normally disorganized and disjointed, while information is properly arranged and organized. Information primarily depends on data for it to be complete.

3.       Data essentially refers to the details and facts about any event while information refers toevents that are concerned with a particular entity or entities. In short, information is basically processed data.
